Here's the plaque to my Dad atop Mt. Suribachi.
It is in the "mitten shape" of the state of Wisconsin.
The Bradleys are Cheeseheads.
The plaque marks the spot where the flag was raised. It overlooks the
famed "Sands of Iwo Jima."

Here is President G. H. W. Bush atop Mt. Suribachi. He is the second president to visit Iwo Jima. (President Dwight Eisenhower was the first.) The marker at my foot marks where my father and his buddies raised the flag on Iwo Jima.
President Bush and I flew by helicopter the next day to the neighboring island of Chi Chi Jima, where he had been shot down.

My second book, Flyboys, (2003) recounts the American experience on the island of Chi Chi Jima. Navy Lt. G.H.W. Bush almost died there.
My research takes place in the Pacific and Asia.
This family lives in a cave in northern China. It's comfy inside.
