Flyboys is the true story of eight young American flyboys who were shot down over an island near Iwo Jima, captured by Japanese troops and taken prisoner. The reality of what happened to the eight prisoners remained a secret because the American and Japanese governments conspired to cover up the shocking truth. Not even the families of the eight airmen were informed what had happened to their sons--until now.

A ninth flyboy was rescued. His name is George Herbert Walker Bush.

Here is President G. H. W. Bush atop Mt. Suribachi. He is the second president to visit Iwo Jima. (President Dwight Eisenhower was the first.) The marker at my foot marks where my father and his buddies raised the flag on Iwo Jima.

President Bush and I flew by helicopter the next day to the neighboring island of Chi Chi Jima, where he had been shot down.
